Aung San Suu Kyi (1945 - )
Until 2015, Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of Aung San, the founder of modern Myanmar, was everybody’s hero. The military had ruled Myanmar since 1988, but this tiny lady led the struggle for democracy, despite the death and disappearance of many of her followers, and despite years spent under house arrest in her own home. She was unable to receive visits from her husband nor her two sons, nor could she visit them in that time. For her heroic resistance to the military, Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. This book tells the story of those dramatic years. Since then, Suu Kyi has been absorbed into a government which has a democratic façade, but many people have criticised her for not being as outspoken as she once was. Even so, she has spent the past few years in and out of jail, and under house arrest.
