Caroline Chisholm (1808-1877) NEW
Caroline Chisholm was often called ‘the immigrant’s friend.’ She arrived in Australia in 1838 and was appalled by the conditions faced by poor immigrants, especially young women who were dumped in Sydney and left to fend for themselves. Not content with arranging accommodation and work for tens of thousands of people, she returned to England, established an Immigration Society and lobbied the British government to regulate the flow of migrants to Australia, and the conditions on migrant ships. In some parts of the world, migrants are still treated badly, but there are still armies of people who devote their energies to them. Caroline Chisholm will continue to be an inspiration to such people.
