Charles Kingsford Smith (1897-1935)

Sir Charles Kingsford Smith would rather you called him Smithy. He saw himself as an ordinary sort of bloke and always found it easy to mix with ordinary people. His life, including service in World War One was full of hair-raising experiences until he met a watery end in 1938. He well and truly earned his reputation as one of the greatest of trail-blazing aviators in the world during the 1920s and 1930s, with his most famous achievement being the first trans-Pacific flight, from America to Australia in 1928. Smithy is a fair dinkum Aussie icon.
