Famous People for School Students
Elizabeth Macarthur (1766–1850) NEW
Elizabeth’s husband, John Macarthur, is usually described as the founder of the Australian sheep industry, but it is arguable that Elizabeth was the person who really made it happen. John knew what he wanted to do, but he was a hothead, who got involved in duels and in a rebellion against the governor of New South Wales. John spent years back in England, defending himself, organising goods and sheep to send to Elizabeth, and writing letters telling her what to do. She did not need much telling, for she successfully bred quality merinos on a property at Camden to which John retired when he went mad and had to be kept in a straitjacket.
