Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896)
Henry Parkes was the father of seventeen children, but also found time to become the Father of Australian Federation. He argued for it for decades before it actually came about in 1901, by which time he was elsewhere. Henry and his first wife migrated from England in 1839, arriving with very little money. By trade, he was an ivory turner, but worked at a number of jobs before becoming a member of the New South Wales parliament. He served five terms as premier with his most notable achievement being the provision of free education for all. To honour his part in Federation, his hairy image was on the Australian $5 bank note for ten years.
