Sir John Monash (1865-1931)
John Monash was never a professional soldier, but he has claims to have been the greatest commander of the First World War. Born in Melbourne to German Jewish immigrants, Monash served as a part time citizen soldier, specialising in artillery. Monash was a successful engineer when war broke out. By then, he was fifty years old and found the cliffs of Gallipoli to be a challenge to his fitness. When the war shifted to France, his qualities as a leader and careful planner came to the fore, with the high point being the Battle of Hamelin 1918. He was brought up to speak German, which he could do fluently for the rest of his life. The family dropped the c from Monasch to make it look less German. Some said that he should not be a general because of his Jewishness. Fortunately, the prejudice of a few did not prevent the enormous contribution made by John Monash, both during the war and afterwards.
