Dame Mary Gilmore (1865-1962)
Mary left school and became a schoolteacher's apprentice at the age of twelve. Later she became a friend of the poet Henry Lawson who introduced her to ideas of socialism. Thus she became involved in improving the lives of working class people, especially women. She was the first female editor of The Australian Worker where she also ran a women's page for many years. Added to this, her fine poetry made her one of the most influential women of the early twentieth century, and earned her a place on the Australian $10 bank note.
