Sidney Kidman (1857 - 1935)
When he was thirteen years old, Sid Kidman ran away from his home in Adelaide, riding a one-eyed horse. He was soon mixing with a strange assortment of men in the Outback and planning to find good land where he would run cattle. In the end, he became the biggest land owner in Australian history. Sid's biggest enemy was always going to be drought, but he had a plan to beat it. He bred horses which he sold at colourful auctions at Kapunda, but when the First World War broke out, he donated thousands of horses to the war effort. He could be a grumpy old bloke though.
