William the Conqueror (1027-1087)
William, from Normandy, had to fight for everything from the time he was a little kid. He beat up everyone in Northern France before he invaded England in 1066, and won the Battle of Hastings, which made him the King of England. The poor old Saxons were pushed aside, and the French-speaking Normans took over. They built castles all over England, made everyone pay taxes and speak French. Everyone was scared of old Bill - except his wife who was only one hundred and twenty centimetres tall.
